I recently became fascinated with the idea of daily routines, habits that enable us to overcome the mundane to do what is essential.

I have always loved the Chinese phrase “天天” which means daily or day after day.

For me, creativity is not rocket science. It has more to do with the ability to keep plugging at something day in and day out, even when the end of the tunnel is nowhere in sight.

Lo and behold, I found a blog that documents the daily routines of great artists and writers.

http://dailyroutines.typepad.com/

My favorite entry? The one on Roald Dahl :

“Settled into a writing career, he lived on a farm where he raised livestock and bred greyhounds. His routine was to write from 10 A.M. until noon, spend the afternoon tending his animals and return to his writing again from 4 to 6 P.M.

His writing was far from effortless. He commonly spent six months working on a single short story.”

There must be something about the zen of tending his animals every afternoon that has put fire into Roald Dahl’s creativity. What a beguiling anecdote about one of the great writers of our time.

I am not a big fan of internet shows but here is one that is brilliantly executed : Black Cab Sessions.

The idea is simple: film unplugged sessions with bands by taking them on a London cab ride.

The result: a breathtaking sense of intimacy as you listen in as the musicians do their thing while they cruise the streets of London.

A few years ago, I had the pleasure of directing the biography of Taiwanese sculptor Ju Ming.

He is best known for his quirky Living World Series and the monumental Tai Chi Series.

In the process of filming the documentary, I fell in love with the wonderful space that is the Ju Ming museum, an open air sculpture park dedicated to the exhibition of Ju’s works.

Hence, I am a little ticked but nonetheless very delighted to see that the museum has launched a new product.

I call it Taichi series 2.0 — cookies cast in the shape of the famous sculptures.

It is thus with great satisfaction that I can finally lay claim to having an entry on “Chinese food” on my blog, right along my musings about ‘Chinese documentary film’, ‘China’s urban life’, ‘Chinese internet.’
